How Long Has This Tradition Been Around?

It's been around since the Spanish brought Catholicism to the Americas. It derives from All Souls Day, a Catholic feast day that celebrates all of the souls who have passed on who are believed to be saints (anyone who goes to heaven). Naturally, this tradition, mixed with existing customs in the Americas, is how we celebrate Día de los Muertos today.

El Día de los Muertos es un momento para celebrar la memoria de los seres queridos que han fallecido.

¿Cuánto tiempo ha existido esta tradición?

La tradición ha existido desde que los españoles trajeron el catolicismo a las Américas. Deriva del Día de Todos los Santos, una fecha católica que celebra a todas las almas que se han convertido en santos (cualquiera que vaya al cielo). Naturalmente, esta tradición, mezclada con las costumbres existentes en las Américas, es como celebramos hoy el Día de los Muertos.

What Customs Are Observed?

Customarily people go to cemeteries where their loved ones are buried and clean up their graves our headstones and sometimes even celebrate there. They meet up with other family members who also come to do the same. Another very common practice, especially in Mexico, is to have an ofrenda, or offering, on an altar. This usually includes photographers of deceased loved ones, their favorite foods, decoration such as skeletons representing them and their profession, flowers, candles, and incense.

¿Qué Costumbres Se Observan?

Por costumbre, las personas van a los cementerios donde descansan sus seres queridos, limpian las tumbas y las lápidas y, a veces, celebran en allí. Se reúnen con otros miembros de la familia que también vienen a hacer lo mismo. Otra práctica común, especialmente en México, es tener una ofrenda en un altar. La ofrenda podrá incluir fotografías de los seres queridos fallecidos, sus comidas favoritas, adornos como esqueletos que los representan a ellos y su profesión, flores, velas e incienso.

Is it Mexico's version of Halloween?

This is not Mexico's version of Halloween, even though, in some ways, it has the same roots. Halloween was originally All Hallows Eve, the day before All Souls Day. While Halloween centers around the spooky and scary, Dia de los Muertos centers around remembrance, family, and community. Dia de los Muertos is much closer to Memorial Day because there is a day, time, and place set aside each year to look back, think about, and remember those we have lost. We get together to talk about them and the things they love, and we share old stories and anecdotes.

"Why are you celebrating death?"

We celebrate the lives of the people who have died. It's a more open approach to a topic that people in the United States associate with fear and sadness. Death waits for no man, and instead of fearing it, this celebration highlights a different aspect of grief: that they are gone, but we still remember that one day, we will be gone too, but we will still be remembered by our loved ones and those we walked through life with.

El Día de los Muertos no es la versión mexicana de Halloween. Aunque, en cierto modo, tiene las mismas raíces. Halloween era originalmente la Víspera de Todos los Santos, el día anterior al Día de los Difuntos. Por el contrario, Halloween se centra en lo espeluznante y aterrador, y el Día de los Muertos se centra en el recuerdo, la familia y la comunidad.
